Martha Sellers Klein is a Shareholder of Mlegal Consulting. Martha has an outstanding track record in partner moves in the Bay Area, and also conducts national and international partner searches for key clients. Her practice includes retained searches for law firms and representing partner candidates on their career moves. She has obtained exceptional results for clients and candidates with whom she has worked in her eight years in the Bay Area.
Martha stands apart from other legal recruiters in the level of knowledge and perspective she acquired from practicing law in New York and working as a legal journalist in New York and London before joining Mlegal eight years ago. She has been a leading expert in national and international law firm recruitment and strategy for more than twenty years. In discussions with thousands of partners and managing partners in firms around the world, she has gained an exceptional understanding of the distinctions between law firms locally, nationally, and internationally.
As a senior journalist at London's top legal publishing company between 1994 and 2003, Martha followed the influx of American firms moving into London and assisted numerous U.S. law firm managing partners in assessing their recruitment and strategic needs in the U.K. and Europe. From 2001 to 2003 Martha was Editor of The Legal 500, which analyzes and rates law firms and lawyers based on the quality of their practices. From 1997 to 2001 she was the Editor of Legal Business magazine, which focused on the competition between and globalization of U.S. and U.K. law firms. Previously she published and edited The Expatriate Lawyer in London, and worked at American Lawyer Media as editor of Corporate Control Alert, a publication for lawyers and investment bankers. These experiences have given her a unique ability to distinguish one law firm from another in terms of practice strengths, client base, financial stability, strategy, and culture. She can help law firms hire the best candidates for their practice needs and enable partners to find the best fit for their practice and personality.
A former corporate lawyer, Martha graduated from University of Virginia Law School in 1985. She practiced law in New York for four years, starting at Mudge Rose Guthrie Alexander & Ferdon and moving laterally in 1987 to Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. As a securities and corporate/M&A associate, she worked on numerous high-profile transactions, such as Kohlberg Kravis Roberts's $25bn LBO of RJR Nabisco in the late 1980s.
Martha graduated Phi Beta Kappa from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1980, and was elected to every major honorary society. Between university and law school, she worked as a legislative aide to former North Carolina Congressman Ike Andrews and former Georgia Senator Herman Talmadge.
