Carter W. Brown
Chief Business Officer
Carter W. Brown serves as Chief Business Officer & Director of Mlegal Group. He works with all stakeholder groups within the company to prepare recommendations for the Board on all vision, values, mission, strategy and policy as well as managing the operations of the company.
Carter has spent his professional life in management roles in professional services companies. He was Co-founder and CEO of Omega Performance Corporation, an educational software company with offices throughout the United States, EMEA and Asia that became the largest global provider of risk analysis and sales training for the commercial banking industry. In 1999, Omega was sold to IIR a billion dollar U.K. based training company and remains today, the leader in its industry sector.
Following Omega, Carter became the first CEO of Major Lindsey & Africa. Working with a very talented group of founders Carter merged the four independently owned and operated offices that comprised MLA into MLA Global, and then led the process of opening nine new U.S. offices and four international offices in London, Hong Kong, Beijing and Tokyo, creating the first global legal search firm. MLA Global developed practices in Associate, Partner, In-House, Law Firm Management placement and Contract Attorney staffing. Carter led the sale of Major, Lindsey & Africa to the Allegis Group, a Baltimore based multi-billion-dollar staffing firm with a well-deserved reputation for excellence in its businesses.
After assisting the transition of MLA’s management to an executive team from Allegis, Carter moved on to try his hand at shorter CEO assignments where his role was to lead a strategic refresh and sometime redirection of the firm. He served as CEO of Law Finance Group, performing a strategy and operations review. As CEO of Coblentz Patch Duffy & Bass LLP, Carter updated and clarified the mission, values and competitive advantages of the firm. Carter also served as interim CEO of Richardson, a large Philadelphia based global sales training company, where he performed a strategy and operational review and helped hire and train a new CEO.
Over his career, Carter has most enjoyed the process of helping to build organizations viewed as market leaders over a longer period of time. Carter has known and respected Joe Macrae the founder of Mlegal for many years and shares his vision of growing the next generation legal recruiting firm.
Mlegal is committed to becoming the premier global partner-focused legal recruiting firm known for extraordinary market knowledge, integrity, professionalism and gravitas. Moreover, Mlegal seeks not just to offer exceptional service to our clients, but also to provide the best platform from which exceptional recruiters may operate, enjoying a warm collegial and collaborative culture while generating industry leading compensation with innovative retirement savings structures. That’s a quest to which Carter is excited to contribute his accumulated manager expertise over the long-term.
Carter earned his Bachelor’s degree in Renaissance Liberal Arts from Raymond College, University of the Pacific, his Master’s degree in Learning Theory from the University of the Pacific, and his MBA from the Harvard Business School. He serves on the board of Elizabeth Spencer Winery, a Napa Valley based winery. He has long served as an adviser to Elizabeth Spencer (and recommends their wines).
